Opinion | There’s a Name for What Trump Is Doing to Trans People: Denationalizing

In recent years, the rights and protections of transgender individuals have come under attack in the United States. From attempts to ban transgender individuals from serving in the military to rolling back protections for transgender students in schools, the Trump administration has been relentless in its efforts to erase the advances made for transgender rights in recent years.

But there is a name for what President Trump and his administration are doing to transgender people: denationalizing. Denationalizing is the act of stripping a group of people of their national identity and rights, effectively rendering them stateless. This can happen through the denial of citizenship, the revocation of rights and protections, or the erasure of a group’s existence within a society.

By targeting transgender individuals and attempting to erase their identities and rights, the Trump administration is engaging in a form of denationalization. They are seeking to de-legitimize transgender identities, erase the progress made in recognizing and protecting transgender rights, and ultimately render transgender individuals as second-class citizens.
