Man Whose Fentanyl Stash Killed Child at Day Care Gets 45-Year Sentence
A man who had a stash of the powerful opioid fentanyl that led to the death of a child at a day care has been sentenced to 45 years in prison. The tragic incident occurred in 2018 when two-year-old Jaxon Adams ingested a lethal dose of fentanyl that was left within reach at the in-home day care run by Amanda and Steven Bayer.
Steven Bayer, 35, pleaded guilty to distributing fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl resulting in death. During the sentencing hearing, the judge condemned Bayer’s actions, stating that he had shown a “complete lack of regard for human life” by leaving the dangerous drug accessible to children.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is often mixed with other drugs like heroin or cocaine, leading to a higher risk of overdose. In this case, the fentanyl was in the form of a powder that was left unsecured in the day care, where children could easily access it.
The tragic death of Jaxon Adams serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and families. The child’s parents, Jordan and Megan Adams, spoke in court about the pain and heartbreak they have endured since their son’s death. They expressed their hope that Bayer’s sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to engage in the distribution of dangerous drugs.
In addition to the 45-year prison sentence, Bayer has also been ordered to pay restitution to the Adams family for funeral expenses and counseling costs. The Bayers, who operated the day care out of their home, have since had their license revoked and the day care has been shut down.
This tragic case highlights the importance of proper handling and storage of dangerous substances, particularly when children are present. It also underscores the need for stricter penalties for those who distribute drugs that can have deadly consequences. Our thoughts are with the Adams family as they continue to grieve the loss of their beloved son, and we hope that justice has been served with Bayer’s sentencing.
