Israel’s Total Blockade of Gaza Has Created ‘Catastrophic’ Conditions, Doctors Say

Israel’s total blockade of Gaza has led to catastrophic conditions for the people living in the besieged territory, according to doctors on the ground.

The blockade, which has been in place since 2007, has severely restricted the flow of goods and people in and out of Gaza. This has had a devastating impact on the health and well-being of the population, with doctors reporting shortages of essential medical supplies, equipment, and medications.

Dr. Yasser Abu-Jamei, the director of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme, has described the situation as “catastrophic” and warned that without immediate intervention, the health system in Gaza is at risk of collapse.

“We are facing a severe shortage of medical supplies, medications, and equipment,” Dr. Abu-Jamei said. “Patients are dying because they cannot access the care they need. The situation is dire.”

The blockade has also had a profound impact on the mental health of the population in Gaza. According to Dr. Abu-Jamei, the ongoing violence and insecurity, coupled with the lack of access to basic services and resources, has led to a significant increase in psychological distress among the population.

“People are living in constant fear and uncertainty,” Dr. Abu-Jamei said. “There is a sense of hopelessness and despair that is pervasive throughout the community.”

The international community has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade and for Israel to lift its restrictions on Gaza. However, despite these calls, the blockade remains in place, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.

Human rights organizations have also condemned the blockade, with Amnesty International describing it as a “flagrant violation of international law” that has resulted in the collective punishment of the population in Gaza.

As doctors continue to struggle to provide care for their patients in the face of severe shortages and restrictions, the international community must take action to alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza.

“We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza,” Dr. Abu-Jamei said. “The blockade must end, and the people of Gaza must be allowed to live in dignity and peace.”
